In tropical and subtropical waters, we can find the barracuda, a species that is characterized by its speed and ferocity. As a born predator, the barracuda is an excellent and relentless hunter, since it has an enormous consumption capacity, with various delicacies that it likes, including sardines, squid and even crabs.

Offshore we can find the largest specimens, known as "great barracuda" however, although it is not uncommon to find specimens of good sizes closer to the coast, the most common is to face the youngest fish, these with sizes that can reach 40 centimeters on average.

The great advantage of being able to find the younger specimens, is that these They tend to gather in schools, for which its fishing is very feasible.

In fact, it is possible to fish the youngest of this species, and perhaps some larger specimens, from the shore, the reason being that they tend to group from the lowest areas of the coast, until gaining ground at greater depths, this from about 40 to 50 meters.

Something that is important is that the youngest are often confused with the bottoms, since their dark gray color on the back can be confused with darker sand or prevent them from being seen when the water is cloudier.

As their teeth are sharp, with fangs and other very long teeth, it is important to take care of a bite, in addition specialized equipment must be used for these, that is, resistant lines and lures.

For sport fishing, the barracuda is sometimes a fish of opportunity. It does not usually go away with the fixed idea that this is the fish of the day, but if the opportunity arises, it takes advantage of it, since the battle it usually gives is excellent.

At the level of techniques there are many that can work and will be adapted to the area, situation and taste of the fisherman. On a boat, trolling or spinning fishing can be very good, however, for shore fishing, we can choose to use fly fishing, casting or surfcasting.

For casting fishing, like the others, the important thing will be the choice of lure. Live bait, as always, comes in handy. However, due to its speed and power in the dive, opting for a good quality artificial lure and special for barracudas is ideal.

Something that we must take into account for barracuda fishing is the schedule, either on the shore or a little further from the coast, the coolest time is convenient, very early in the morning or late at night. To some fishing with a full moon, for barracudas, is quite prolific.

During the day, fishing in murky waters will be the most recommended and it will always be necessary to have an extra rod ready since when casting your bait you can end up attracting more than one, another opportunity that will be impossible to miss.
