El black horn or snapper is a fish very present in the Spanish coasts and it is an ideal specimen both for fishing and for photographic capture, since among its particularities is that it is quite calm and does not shy away from divers when it is close by.

Generalities of the hornbills

  • They are fish belonging to the family of the espáridas (golden and herreras).
  • They are also known by other names, among which are:
    • Sea bream
    • Common snapper (denomination given in the peninsula)
    • mallet
  • Oval and compressed body.
  • It can reach sizes of up to 90 centimeters, however, the average for its capture is 30 to 33 centimeters.
  • It has a characteristic pink color that fades when it reaches the belly area until it turns silver.
  • Its habitat area in spring and summer is focused on the coastal zone, reaching between 30 and 40 meters. When winter comes they usually go to deeper waters.

  • Light equipment is recommended, since the fishing day can be intense. Hybrid rods could be perfect for your fishing.
  • The threads to use can be medium, seeking not to make sudden movements so as not to break it.
  • Recommended baits may include: worms and baby titas.
  • If lures are used, vinyl ones are ideal, especially the flashier ones.
  • At the lead level, these can be used with a phosphorescent cover or even use bright tones, such as red, which are ideal for attracting the interest of these fish.  
  • Among the fishing techniques that are usually used we have light spinning.
  • If fishing is done from a boat, the number of pieces may be greater, since the fisherman will have better mobility and access to deeper areas.
